Riga, the Latvian capital, is one of the more interesting Baltic capitals, a metropolis with a beautiful ambience and a pulsating atmosphere.  It has a well-preserved medieval heritage as well, with its UNESCO World Heritage Site Old Town and Art Nouveau architecture.

First 24 Hours

You can arrive at the Latvian capital via the Riga International Airport, which is located five miles southwest of the city center.  From there, you can catch Bus 22 that will take you directly to the heart of Riga, near the Freedom Monument.  It arrives at the terminal every 30 minutes, while the journey costs around Lt0.20 and takes 20 minutes.  Alternatively, you can opt to hire a taxi, which will cost you upwards of Lt8.

Riga is a pretty large city; so navigating it may be fairly difficult, especially for first-timers.  You should remember, though, that most of its attractions are located in its Old Town, found by the eastern banks of the Daugava River.  You may collect valuable tourist information from its main tourist office (Schwab House, 00 371 704 4377, website). A popular tourist attraction in Riga is St. Peter’s Church (19 Skārņu iela Rīga 1050, 7 229 426), which dominates the city skyline.  It was built in 1209, and is most known for its tall tower.  The church had been struck by lightning six times and had collapsed twice, It was last restored in 1973.  The best option there is taking the elevator to the top of its tower, where you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the city from a height of around 70 meters.

FREEDOM MONUMENT: If you’re feeling patriotic

One of the most recognizable landmarks in the city is the Freedom Monument (1 Brivivas iela / Pilsetas kanals Riga, Latvia).  It is an impressive memorial built in 1935 to honor the soldiers who had fought during the Latvian War of Independence in 1918.  The structure was designed by Kārlis Zāle out of granite, travertine, and copper, and stands 42 meters high.  You can admire its numerous sculptures and bas reliefs that depict Latvian culture and history, and also try to see the figure of Lady Liberty holding three gilded stars at its very top.

VECRIGA: Have a historical hike

Of course, a visit to Riga would not be complete without heading to its Old Town, Vecrīga.  A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is located by the eastern banks of the Daugava River, and is closed to vehicular traffic, meaning that you can only see its sights on foot.  The area is mostly known for its impressive array of old churches and cathedrals.  Of these, the Riga Cathedral (Palasta street 2, +371 67227573, website) is the most notable.  It dates back to 1211, and is considered to be the largest medieval church in the Baltic States.

RIGA CASTLE: Visit a royal residence, and then some

You can arrive at the historically important city of Quito via the Mariscal Sucre International Airport, which is located about eight kilometers from the city’s New Town section.  From there, perhaps the best way to reach the heart of the city and your hotel is hiring a taxi by the exit of the international terminal.  The journey will cost you no more than $8.  You can opt to pay a fixed amount at one of the information desks at the terminal, after which you will only have to show the receipt to the taxi driver.

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Quito is the El Panecillo (El Panecillo, south of Old Town, Quito), which is also known as the Virgin Monument.  Named after the panecillo, a kind of small bread roll to which it looks surprisingly alike, it is a sculpture of the La Virgen de Quito that is 45 meters tall.  It is located on a hill, and provides sweeping views of the cityscape.

You can reach the site by a taxi from the Old Town for a fare of about $3.  It is open during Mondays to Fridays from 9 am to 6 pm, and on weekends from 9 am to 5 pm.  Admission will cost you $1, and you will have to pay an additional $1 if you want to ascend to the top of the sculpture.

FUNDACION GUAYSAMIN: Appreciate art

Art lovers will definitely enjoy a visit to the Fundacion Guaysamin (Calle José Bosmediano E 15-68 Bellavista, 02/2465-265), which is an art museum dedicated solely to the works and collections of one of Ecuador’s foremost artists, Oswaldo Guayasamín.  It is divided into three sections.

The first is the El Museo Arqueológico (Archaeology Museum), which features the artist’s collection of pre-Colombian art such as sculptures of tribal chiefs and shamans, as well as jugs with impressive carvings.  Another is the Museo de Arte Moderno (Museum of Modern Art), which houses a collection of Guaysamin’s own art, including his masterpiece – the “La Edad de la Ira” (The Age of Anger).  Last but not the least is the Museo de Arte Colonial (Museum of Colonial Art), which exhibits the artist’s collection of colonial art, such as over 80 crucifixes.

LA PLAZA DE LA INDEPENDENCIA: Let’s take a hike

It is among the city’s most excciting clubs, hosting performances by go-go dancers and playing music ranging from Offspring to Tiesto.  You can also try out Gaudí (2nd floor, Plaza Foch, 02/2451-297), a funky and stylish bar with excellent wines and cocktails, and nice views.

A nice alternative is Macondo (Calama and Juan León Mera, Quito, 02/2227-563). It is a bar-discothèque that is noted for its dance and house music, creative cocktails, and minimalist décor.

First 24 Hours

You can fly to the multicultural city of Bogota via the El Dorado International Airport, which is located 13 kilometers west of the city center.  From there, you can catch the “Aeropuerto” bus that arrives at the international arrivals terminal, and will drop you off at the Terminal de Buses by the city center.  Alternatively, you can opt to take a taxi to your hotel, which will cost you around COP18,000 to COP25,000.  Do remember to get a computer-printed slip at the airport exit so that you’ll not be overcharged by the taxi driver.

Bogota is the largest city in Colombia, although navigating it is fairly easy.  Most tourist attractions in the city are concentrated in its historic center and at La Candelaria.  One of the best and most efficient ways to travel around Bogota is via its Transmilenio bus system.  You can collect valuable travel information at its tourist information office, the Instituto Distrital de Turismo y Cultura (Carrera 8 no. 9-83, 1/327-4916). MONSERRATE: Let’s take a view

Perhaps one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bogota is Monserrate, a mountain located right in the city center.  It rises to a height of around 3,152 meters and is usually visited by pilgrims going to the 17^th century church perched atop its summit – dedicated to the “El Señor Caído” (Fallen Lord).  You can also find various restaurants, souvenir shops, and tourist facilities there.  However, the highlight of a trip to the mountain is, of course, enjoying the views of the city and the surrounding areas.

You can access the mountain by climbing up (popular among pilgrims).  Alternatively, you can opt to ride the Teleférico de Monserrate (S.a. Carrera 2 Este, No. 21-48 Paseo Bolivar – PBX, (57) (1) 284 5700, website), which is a tourist cable car connecting the city to Monserrate.  You can also catch a funicular railway train to the summit.

PLAZA DE BOLIVAR: Go on a cultural hike

You can go on a cultural hike at the Plaza de Bolivar, which serves as the main square of Bogota.  It is located right in the heart of the city’s historical area, and was named after the famous South American revolutionary Simon Bolivar.  In fact, you can see a statue of the historical figure there, sculpted by the Italian artist Pietro Tenerani in 1846. It has been the first public monument in Bogota.  The square is also home to various other historical buildings and monuments.

One of these is the Capitolio Nacional, which serves as the seat of both houses of the Congress of Colombia.  It was built in 1876, and is best known for its fresco-style mural painted by Master Santiago Martínez Delgado, which depicts Simon Bolivar in the act of exiting the Cucuta Congress after the creation of the Great Colombia.  The mural is actually considered the most important of its kind in the country.

There you can also see the Catedral Primada de Colombia (Carrera 7 no. 10-11, 1/341-1954, website). It is a Roman Catholic Cathedral that was built in 1807 upon the foundation of Bogota’s first church, which dates back to 1539.  The cathedral is considered the biggest of its kind in Colombia, and it houses one of the largest organs in South America, as well as a collection of 17^th to 18^th century paintings and carvings.  You can also find the tomb of the founder of Bogota, Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada.  The site is open during Mondays to Saturdays from 8:30 am to 1 pm, and on Sundays from 8:30 am to 2 pm.

Another historical building to be visited in the square is the Capilla Del Sagrario (Carrera 7, in front of Plaza de Bolívar). INDEPENDENCE PARK: Relax, unwind

You can relax and unwind at the Independence Park (Calle 26 Carreras 7 and 5, downtown Bogota), which is regarded as one of Bogotá’s most traditional parks.  It was established in 1910 in commemoration of Colombia’s independence centennial, and features a landscape dominated by eucalyptus forests and neo-Classical architecture.  You can also see there the District Planetarium and the Modern Art Museum.

NATIONAL MUSEUM: Have a historical experience

You can fly to the so-called “Miami of the South” via the Tocumen International Airport, which is located 24 kilometers from the city center.  From there, you can catch a licensed taxi at the airport terminal, which can take you to the heart of Panama City and drop you off at your chosen hotel.  The ride lasts for about 30 minutes, and will cost you upwards of $30, including toll fee.

Though Panama City is a modern metropolis, it is still fairly difficult to navigate, especially with its complex web of streets and lack of easily recognizable landmarks. Perhaps one of the most popular tourist attractions in Panama City is the Panama Canal, which is considered one of the world’s great shortcuts.  It is a ship waterway that stretches for 77 kilometers and serves as a key conduit joining the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.  The canal has been in operation since 1914, and transports ships across by raising them nearly 85 feet from the sea level using gravity-powered locks.  One of the most known of these locks is the Miraflores Lock (Canalside, Panama City, Panama, (507) 276-8325). You can fly to the City of Lakes via the Dabok Airport, which is located 22 kilometers east of Udaipur’s city center.  From there, the best way to get to your hotel is a taxi ride into town.  If you’re on a budget, you can catch a regular, non-air conditioned taxi for a fare of about INR375.  Alternatively, you can opt to ride an air conditioned one for upwards of INR475.

Udaipur is not a particularly large metropolis, so navigating it shouldn’t prove to be too difficult. Perhaps one of the most popular tourist attractions in Udaipur is the Kumbhalgarh Fort (90km or 56 miles from Udaipur), an impressive fortress built upon 13 mountain peaks.  It dates back to the 15^th century, when it was commissioned by Rana Kumbha, and is noted for having been captured by enemy forces only once during its existence.  The fort’s massive walls stretch for over 26 kilometers, and are among the longest of its kind in the country.

Kumbhalgarh Fort is in fact located inside the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, a nature park that covers an area of roughly 578 square kilometers.  It has a landscape dominated by forests, and is home to a diverse variety of wildlife, such as wolves, leopards, sloths, jackals, hyenas, chinkaras, hares, and antelopes.  You can also find different bird and fish species there.

CITY PALACE: Have a royal experience

You can have a royal experience at the City Palace of Udaipur, which is located by the eastern banks of the Lake Pichola.  It is considered as the largest of its kind in the state of Rajasthan, and dates back to 1559, when it was built as the royal residence of the Maharana Udai Singh.  The palace has a flamboyant style of architecture, and features elements of the Rajasthani and Mughal influences.  The complex itself is made up of around 11 palaces, as well as stone towers that rise up 30 meters into the sky.

Today, it functions as a museum, where you can find various collections such as 17^th century peacock mosaics, glass and porcelain figures, miniature sculptures, Chinese ceramics, massive chandeliers, Venetian mirrors, and crystal furniture.  You can also visit the palace’s Classic Car Collection, which features automobiles once used by the Mewar family.  The site is open daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, and admission will cost you INR350.

NATHDWARA: Go to a temple

Temple lovers will definitely cherish a visit to the Shri Nathji Temple in Nathdwara, which is located 48 kilometers from Udaipur.  It is considered to be the second-richest temple in India, and is a popular destination for pilgrims, especially during the Holi, Diwali, and Janmashthami festivals.  Inside, it houses a sculpture of the Lord Krishna fashioned out of black marble, and is reputed to be around 600 years old.  However, the temple’s interior is usually closed to non-Hindus, but those who cannot enter can content themselves with admiring the impressive picchwai paintings (hand-spun cloth painted with scenes from the life of the Lord Krishna) that decorate its façade.

You can discover Udaipur’s other tourist attractions during your next 24 hours in the city.  Let the first be the Eklingji Temple (22km or 14 miles north of Udaipur), which is a temple that was first built in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal.  It was mostly rebuilt during the 15^th century, and is today a marble complex housing 108 temples.  Inside the complex, you’ll find a statue of the Lord Shiva, a four-faced black lingam, and Kama Sutra carvings.  The site is open daily from 4:15 am to 7:45 pm.

CHITTAURGARH: Visit a fort again

Chittaurgarh (115km or 71 miles from Udaipur) is another of Udaipur’s historic forts.  It dates back to the 7^th century, and once served as the center of the Mewar Empire.  Covering an area of roughly 280 hectares on a hill 180 meters high, the fort is known for being sacked by enemy forces three times – the first one resulting in a complete wipeout of its inhabitants.

Inside the complex, you’ll see its seven massive gates, the Shingara Chauri Mandir temple, a 15^th century palace, the Khumba Shyam Temple, the Meera Temple, the Vijay Stambh tower, Padmini’s Palace, the Fateh Prakash Palace, and the Kalika Mata Temple, among others.  You can also enjoy nice views of the surrounding area from the Gaumukh Reservoir, which looks unusually like a cow’s mouth.  Admission to the site is free.

RANAKPUR TEMPLES: Have a religious visit

You can have a religious experience at the Ranakpur Temples (65km or 40 miles from Udaipur, 02934/28-5019), which are among the city’s most popular tourist attractions.  It is a temple complex considered as an epitome of Jain architecture, with its ornately-carved temples covered in exquisitely-detailed relief carvings.  Inside, you’ll find the Chaumukha Temple, which is known for its 1,444 intricately-carved pillars and 66 shrines.  The site is open daily from 11:30 am to 5 pm, and admission will cost you INR50.

PALACES OF DUNGARPUR: Admire architecture

Other noteworthy attractions for tourists in Udaipur are the Palaces of Dungarpur (120km or 75 miles south of Udaipur).  Of these, perhaps the most impressive is the Juna Mahal, a 13^th century fortress-like building that stands seven stories tall.  It is noted for its walls and columns that are draped with impressive frescoes, as well as its mosaics made out of porcelain, glass, and tiles.  Its ceilings are adorned with paintings, while its floors are covered with Persian carpets.  You can also find the Maharaja’s Suite, which features miniature paintings of Kama Sutra scenes.  Admission to the site will cost you INR150.

Nearby is the Udai Bilas Palace (Dungarpur, Rajasthan 314 001, 02964/23-0808, website), which is a scenic building located by the banks of the Gaibsagar Lake.  It is a nice place to see Rajput architecture, impressive murals, and Art Deco decorations, as well as more than 122 different bird species.

First 24 Hours

Touch down at Prague, one of Europe’s premier tourist destinations, via the Prague Ruzyně Airport, which is the city’s main hub for international arrivals.  It is located 10 kilometers west of the city center.  From there, you can hire a minibus to take you to the heart of the city.  A particular minibus service, Cedaz (00 420 224 281 005), offers a ride for up to four persons to one address, charging 480Kc.  You can also ride a 119 bus for only 20Kc, although it will only take you as far as the Dejvicka metro station.  After arriving at the station, you will have to take a ride on the city’s three-line underground network.  Tickets there cost around 14Kc.

Prague is bisected by the Vltava River, and has two major districts: Stare Mesto (Old Town) and Nove Mesto (New Town).  You can learn more about the city, its attractions, and transportation at its main tourist office (Old Town Square, 00 420 12 444, website). A popular tourist attraction in Prague is the Petřín hill, which is a popular recreational area for the locals as well as tourists.  It is located near the left bank of the Vltava River, and stands hall at 130 meters.  The area is covered by parks, and has been depicted in the works of authors such as Franz Kafka and Milan Kundera.  You can reach the top of the hill via the Petřín funicular, a train ride which will cost you around 14Kc for a single ticket.  Once there, you can see historical sights such as the Hunger Wall, the Strahov Monastery, and the Memorial to the Victims of Communism.

However, the highlight there is the Petřínská rozhledna, otherwise known as the Petřín lookout tower.  It is a 60-meter tall steel framework tower that closely resembles Paris’ Eiffel Tower.  You can brave its 299 steps to the summit, where you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the cityscape.  The tower also has a gift shop and a small café.  It is open daily between 10 am and 10 pm from April to October, and on weekends between 10 am and 5 pm from November to March.

The hill also houses the Štefánik’s Observatory (Štefánikova hvězdárna, Petřín 205, 118 46 Prague 1, +420 257 320 540, website).  The observatory specializes in astronomy and related natural sciences, and is known for its three domes fitted with powerful telescopes.  It is open to public daytime and nighttime observation of the sky.  Entrance will set you back around 65Kc.

CHARLES BRIDGE: Cross the river on a historical bridge

Perhaps one of Prague’s most popular landmarks is the Charles Bridge (3 Křižovnické náměstí 110 00 Prague 1).  It was built in 1357, and stretches for 516 meters across the Vltava River supported by 16 arches.  You’ll see there a decoration of around 30 statues and statuaries crafted in a distinct baroque style.  The bridge is quiet by night, but if you pass through it during the day, you’ll find that it bustles with traders, merchants, painters, and of course, tourists.

At one end of the bridge, you can find the Charles Bridge Museum (3 Křižovnické náměstí 110 00 Prague 1, 776 776 779, website). Inside, you’ll see various exhibits about the bridge’s history, as well as from the lives of the people who had lived around it.  The museum is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm, and admission will cost you around 150 Kc.

VYSEHRAD: See the birthplace of Prague

Don’t forget to pay a visit to Vyšehrad (5b V Pevnosti 128 00 Prague 2, +4202.4141.0348, website).  It is a castle that is a popular landmark, and is believed to have been the location of the first settlement that would eventually become Prague.  It dates back to the 10^th century, and is home to the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul and the Vyšehrad Cemetery.  The former is a neo-Gothic church known for its impressive stone mosaic, while the latter is the final resting place of some of the most famous people from Czech history, such as Dvorak, Smetana, and Neruda.  The site is open daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm, and entrance will cost you 10 Kc.

NATIONAL MUSEUM: Learn more about Czech history

You can fly to the magnificent city of Shanghai via the Shanghai Pudong International Airport, which is located 30 kilometers east of the city center.  From there, you can catch a Maglev train that arrives at the terminal every 20 minutes and will take you to the Longyang Lu station.  The journey lasts for only seven minutes, and will cost you Y50.  After that, you can take a taxi to the heart of the city, or walk to the nearby Metro station for a train to the city center.

You can have a religious experience at the Jade Buddha Temple (Anyuan Lu 170, Putuo, Shanghai, China, 021/6266-3668, website), which is one of the most popular Chinese Buddhist temples in Shanghai.  It was built in 1882, and is noted for its Song Dynasty style of architecture.  Inside, you’ll find a large reclining Buddha fashioned out of marble, which replaced an earlier jade Buddha representing the famous personality’s death.

The temple’s Grand Hall is home to other statues, such as the Three Golden Buddhas, Gods of the Twenty Heavens, 18 Arhats, and Guayin, among others.  You can also find the Chamber of Four Heavenly Kings, which contains sculptures of Maitreya, Wei Tuo Bodhisattva, and the Four Heavenly Kings.  The site is open daily from 8 am to 4:30 pm, and admission will cost you Y20.

SHANGHAI OCEAN AQUARIUM: Discover the underwater world

SHANGHAI ZOO: Meet wildlife

Another noteworthy attraction for tourists in Shanghai is the Shanghai Zoo (Changning, Shanghai, China, 021-62689773), which is the city’s main zoological garden.  It is home to a wide variety of fauna, proud of a great collection of over 6,000 animals such as Giant pandas, South China tigers, black bulbuls, spider monkeys, African wild dogs, maned wolves, Canadian lynxes, gorillas, kangaroos, polar bears, giraffes, and Bactrian camels.  You can also find around 100,000 trees of 600 different species at the site.  The zoo is open daily from 7 am to 5 pm, and admission will cost you Y30.

YUYUAN GARDEN: Have a flowery experience

You can fly to the Ukrainian capital via the Boryspil International Airport, which is located 29 kilometers east of the city center.  From there, you can catch a “Polit” bus that arrives at the airport terminal every 20 to 30 minutes.  The journey lasts between 50 minutes to an hour and a half depending on traffic, and will cost you UAH20.  Alternatively, you can opt to take a taxi to the heart of the city, although this may cost you up to UAH200.

Kiev is the largest city in Ukraine, but it is surprisingly easy to navigate.  It is bisected by the Dnieper River, with the western half housing most of the tourist attractions in the city.  You can get around on foot or by using its efficient metro line system.  Kiev does not have a central tourist office, so you will have to purchase your maps and guidebooks at the various bookstalls and kiosks scattered throughout the city.

One of the more popular tourist attractions in Kiev is the Poshtova Ploscha, which is located in the heart of the city.  Also known as the Poshtova Square, it is considered among the most historic squares in the city, and is home to various historic monuments and structures.  Some of the landmarks to be found there are the Podil Post Office (which contains a small art museum) and the Rizdvo Church.

However, the highlight is perhaps the nearby Kiev River Port, the city’s main river port.  There, you can take a 90-minute boat ride along the Dnieper River and enjoy nice views of islands, caves, and the river banks.

MONASTERY OF THE CAVES: Visit a World Heritage Site

You can have a UNESCO World Heritage Site experience by visiting the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (21 Yanvarskogo Vostaniya st., Kijev, website). Also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, it is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery that dates back to 1015, and serves as an important center of the religion in Eastern Europe.  The complex is made up of various architectural monuments such as underground cave systems, fortification walls, cathedrals, and bell towers.

Perhaps the most prominent feature of Kiev Perchersk Lavra is the Great Lavra Bell Tower which, at a height of 96.5 meters, is one of the tallest freestanding bell towers in the country.  It has a distinct Classical style of architecture, and was designed by the architect Johann Gottfried Schäde.  Other attractions include the Gate Church of the Trinity, Church of the Saviour at Berestove, and the Kiev Pechersk Lavra caverns.

The complex had also served as the burial site of numerous saints, royalty, and historical figures.  It is home to a museum as well, where you can see various artifacts such as chalices, crucifixes, textiles, embroidery, needlework, precious metals, higher clergy portraits, and catacombs.  The site is open during Mondays to Saturdays from 9 am to 6 pm.

BABI YAR: Remember the Jews

You can pay your respects to the victims of World War II at Babi Yar, which is a ravine located just outside Kiev.  It is regarded as the site of the largest massacre of Jews in the Soviet Union – some 33,771Jews were believed to have been killed there in a single operation.  Today, it is a park where you can relax and remember the victims.  You can also see a memorial dedicated to the city’s Jewish community.

CHERNOBYL MUSEUM: Learn more about the infamous Chernobyl disaster

You can learn more about the infamous Chernobyl disaster of 1986 at the Ukrainian National Chernobyl Museum (1 Kharyvyj Pereulok Street  Kiev, +380 (44) 4175427). It is a popular tourist attraction, and is dedicated to chronicling the events before and after one of the worst nuclear disasters in history.  Inside, you’ll find various exhibits such as memorabilia, scale models, artifacts, and visual media.  It is advisable to visit it using a guided tour, which includes a film showing where you can see how Chernobyl and the surrounding towns look today.

You can fly to the Turkish capital via the Esenboğa International Airport, which is located around 28 kilometers northeast of the city center.  From there, you can catch a bus that arrives at the terminal every half hour.  The journey takes about 35 minutes, and will cost you TRY10, although between 12 am and 6 am you will be charged 25 per cent higher.  Alternatively, you can use a cooperative taxi arrangement (0312/428-5282, website) along with three other passengers for around TRY75.

ATATURK MAUSOLEUM: Pay your respects to the great Turkish leader

Among the most popular tourist attractions in Ankara is the Ataturk Mausoleum (Akdeniz Cad., Anittepe, Ataturk, 0312/231-7975).  Also known as Anitkabir, it is the final resting place of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk – the man who led the Turkish War of Independence and became the founder of the Turkish republic.  It was constructed in 1944, and is perched on a hill called Rasattepe (Observation Hill).

It is known for its vast mosaic courtyard, towers, and sculptures.  You can also watch the Changing of the Guard at the site.  Inside, you’ll find the Hall of Honors that contains the tomb of the famous leader, which is inlaid with gold leaf décor.  Other attractions inside the complex include gift shops and the Ataturk and War of Independence Museum.  You can also take a stroll through the Peace Park that features more than 50,000 decorative shrubs, trees, and flowers taken from more than 25 countries.
